WISH
We use wish
About a present situation – to say that we would like it to be different.
About a past situation – to show regret (we are sorry it wasn’t different).
About a future situation – when we want something to happen or to change or when we want somebody to do something.
About a Past Perfect situation  - Used for a past wish or regret
About a Past Continuous - past continuous is used to express that we want to be doing a different action in the present (or future).

1.      Wish about the Present

When we are expressing a wish about the present, the verb after wish is in the Past tense, exactly as in Conditional 2.

Eg :
I wish I knew the answer.
He wishes he didn’t have asthma.
I wish it weren’t raining.
I don’t earn much money. I wish I earned a lot of money

As in Conditional 2, when we use the verb to be after wish, the form that we usually use is were.

Eg :
I wish I were stronger.
Rachel wishes she were on holiday.

2.      Wish about the Past

When we express a wish about the past, the verb after wish is in the Past Perfect tense, exactly as in Conditional 3.

Eg :
I wish I had seen that movie. (Real situation: I didn’t see it)
She wishes she had studied for the exam. (Real situation: She didn’t study for the exam)
I wish I hadn’t lost the money. (Real situation: I lost the money)
I wish I knew the answer. (In fact, I do not know the answer)

3.
For a wish about the future time, we use would after wish.

Wish about the Future

Eg :
I wish you would stop that noise.
I wish it would stop raining.
We often use wish…wouldn’t to complain about the way people do things.
I wish they wouldn’t talk so loudly.

4.      Wish about the Perfect
Past Perfect situation

wish + past perfect is used to express a regret, or that we want a situation in the past to be different.

Eg :
I wish I had told my mom the truth. (I did not tell her the truth)
I wish I hadn’t eaten so much. (I ate a lot)
I wish they’d come on holiday with us. (They didn’t come on holiday)
I wish I had studied harder at school. (I was lazy at school)
You were too slow getting ready to go out. I wish you hadn’t been so slow getting ready
I promised our friends we’d arrived on time. I wish I hadn’t promised we’d arrive on time because now they’ll be waiting for us

5.      Wish about the Continuous
Past Continuous

wish + past continuous is used to express that we want to be doing a different action in the present (or future).

Eg :
I wish I was lying on a beach now. (I’m sitting in the office)
I wish it wasn’t raining. (It is raining)
I wish you weren’t leaving tomorrow. (You are leaving tomorrow

Wish and Hope
To express that you want something to happen in the future (not wanting a situation to be different, and not implying impatience or annoyance) hope is used instead of wish.
·         I hopeit’s sunny tomorrow.
“I wish it was sunny tomorrow” is not correct.
·         I hope she passes her exam next week.
“I wish she were passing her exam next week” is not correct.
·         I hope the plane doesn’t crash tomorrow.
“I wish the plane wouldn’t crash tomorrow” is not correct.

Wish and Want
wish + infinitive or wish + object + infinitive is used to mean want in a formal situation.
·         I wish to leave now. (+ infinitive)
·         I wish to speak to your supervisor please. (+ infinitive)
·         I do not wish my name to appear on the list. (+ object + infinitive)
